I just read a really awesome nonfiction book called Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot. This biography is the true story of a little girl who isn’t really famous except that she wrote a special letter to a pilot. People who lived in East Germany after World War II couldn’t get any supplies—even food, so pilots flew over dropping food and supplies with parachutes. Lt. Gail Halverson secretly began dropping candy with little parachutes to the children. One little girl named Mercedes wrote a letter to the “Chocolate Pilot” asking him to drop candy at her house. Because of her letter, Lt. Halversen and Mercedes became friends for life. This is a great book about how ordinary people overcame a tough time after war—you should check it out! Be sure to visit my website at www.professordewey.com to see a video about this book. Be sure to let me know when you read about this “True Story of the Berlin Airlift and the Candy that Dropped from the Sky.” Tell me what kind of candy you would have like to see dropped by parachute! Happy Reading!

Dear Brittani and Grace,
I LOVE chocolate too--almost as much as I love reading books! It would be cool to have chocolate drop out of the sky--but it wouldn't be cool to not have enough food :-(
Be sure to keep reading and BLOGGING me about what you're reading!

Dear Professor Dewey;
We just finished reading the book Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot. We liked the part about the plane dropping the candy. We wish that a plane would drop candy on Townsell Elementary. We would like for it to be chocolate like Three Musketeers and bubble gum and Smarties. Do you think Smarties would make us smart?
Thanks for telling us about a great book!

Dear Mrs. W's class,
I agree...it would be GREAT if chocolate dropped out of the sky at our schools! But I don't think Smarties make us smart--I think Reading great books helps, though!
So keep up the great reading!!!
Happy Reading,
Professor Dewey :-)

Dear Professor Dewey,
We are reading Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot too!! We really like it. We loved how happy Mercedes was when she got the candy. I bet it was delicious. We were sad when the tall boy got her candy first. I hope the book has a happy ending.
We are also reading Junie B. Jones and the Smelly Bus. It is very funny. She put her shoe on a desk and said she had licked it to make it shiny. GROSS!!! Right now she hates the bus. I think she will learn to like it.
